CBT vs OMR: what changes for NEET students
CBT means you answer on a computer. OMR means you mark answers on a paper sheet. For NEET, the mode for 2027 is not settled. As of 4 November 2026, NTA has not issued an official notice. Here is what changes for you if CBT is chosen, and what remains true of the recent NEET pattern.
Will NEET 2027 be CBT or OMR?
NEET is still a pen-and-paper OMR exam. NEET 2025, NEET 2026 and the 21 June 2026 Re-NEET were held on paper.
After the 2026 paper leak, the Education Ministry said in May that NEET would move to CBT. NTA told the Supreme Court it planned to use CBT from 2027. Later, the Centre told the Court the move was under active consideration. The task force reviewing exam reforms has until January 2027. NTA has not announced the 2027 mode.
Recent reports say 2027 could remain on paper or use a hybrid format. These are reports, not an official decision. Check the NEET CBT status and updates before relying on a change.
What is the difference between CBT and OMR?
In OMR, you read a printed paper and fill a bubble on a separate answer sheet. In CBT, you read the question on a screen and select an answer with the mouse. NTA’s existing JEE Main and CUET CBT screens let candidates change saved answers and move between questions.
| Part of the exam | OMR, as used in recent NEET exams | CBT, as used in NTA’s JEE Main and CUET |
|---|---|---|
| Answering | Mark one bubble on the answer sheet. | Select an answer on screen, then use Save & Next. |
| Changing an answer | Erase or alter a bubble only as the exam instructions allow. | Return to a question and change a saved answer. |
| Moving between questions | Turn pages in the paper. | Use the question palette or move between sections. |
| Time | NEET 2025 and 2026 had 180 minutes. | A screen timer counts down. At zero, the exam ends by itself. NEET’s CBT time has not been announced. |
| Rough work | Work on paper. | NTA’s JEE Main and CUET bulletins say rough sheets are provided at the centre and collected afterwards. |
| Reading | Read the printed paper. | Read the question on the monitor. Get used to looking between the screen and rough sheet. |
| Answering errors | You may mark the wrong bubble or the wrong question row. | You may click the wrong option or leave an answer unsaved. Check the palette and use Save & Next. |
| After the exam | NEET’s answer-key and result steps depend on NTA’s notices. | NTA’s CBT process for NEET has not been announced. |
The CBT details in this table come from NTA’s JEE Main 2025 bulletin and CUET-UG 2026 bulletin. They describe those exams. They do not confirm the rules for a future NEET CBT.
What stays the same if NEET moves to CBT?
The computer changes how you enter an answer. It does not by itself tell us that the syllabus or question pattern will change. The latest confirmed NEET pattern is from 2025 and 2026: 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes, for 720 marks. A correct answer gets 4 marks, a wrong answer loses 1, and an unanswered question gets 0. See the source details for the current pattern.
These are the recent rules, not a promise about NEET 2027. No NMC syllabus specific to NEET 2027 was found. NTA has also not decided whether there will be one or several shifts, or whether scores will be normalised. Read more about NEET CBT shifts and marking.
Which OMR habits should you unlearn?
You will not have to fill bubbles on a computer. You will have to save each answer using the screen controls. On NTA’s existing CBT screen, clicking another question in the palette does not save your current answer. Use Save & Next before moving on.
Try these habits in practice:
- Read the full question on screen before choosing an option.
- After selecting an answer, check that the palette shows it as answered.
- Use the palette to return to a question. Do not rely on memory.
- Keep rough calculations on the sheet, then look back at the screen before saving.
- Practise mouse movement and scrolling, so they feel familiar.
NTA says an answer marked for review is still evaluated if you selected an answer. A question marked for review without an answer is not evaluated. The rule appears in both the JEE Main and CUET CBT instructions. See our screen guide to the palette and buttons for a walk-through.
Is CBT better than OMR for NEET students?
Neither mode is automatically easier for every student. OMR is familiar if you have practised on paper. You can see the printed page and make rough notes beside a question. But you must place each answer in the correct bubble. The Education Minister called OMR “the root cause” of the 2026 paper leak. That was his view on the leak, not proof that CBT removes every exam risk. Read his May statement.
CBT allows you to move through a digital question list and change saved answers. Some students may find that convenient. Others may need time to get comfortable reading on a screen and switching between a monitor and rough sheet.
Access is also a real concern. The Centre told the Supreme Court that NEET’s large scale and inclusivity matter. It raised effects on rural, women and low-connectivity candidates, as well as a shortage of test centres in some regions. A CBT plan must account for centre access and capacity. The Centre’s position was reported after its Supreme Court affidavit.
How can you practise while the mode is undecided?
Keep preparing for NEET’s current syllabus and question pattern. Add screen practice as a small skill, without assuming the 2027 mode is settled. Our CBT preparation guide has simple drills for using the palette, reading on screen and managing rough work.
You can also try our free NTA-style practice screen. It copies the interface used in NTA’s JEE Main and CUET exams. It is a practice tool, not an official NEET CBT, because NTA has not released a NEET CBT test.
Questions students ask
Is NEET 2027 confirmed as CBT?
No. As of 4 November 2026, NTA has not issued an official notice on the mode. The Centre said the move is under active consideration, and recent reports differ.
What is the main difference between CBT and OMR?
With OMR, you mark an answer bubble on paper. With CBT, you select and save an answer on a computer screen. In both, you still need to choose the correct option.
Does CBT change NEET’s marking scheme?
The latest confirmed pattern gives 4 marks for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer and 0 for no answer. NTA has not announced NEET 2027’s pattern.
Can I change an answer in a CBT exam?
NTA’s JEE Main and CUET instructions allow candidates to return to a question and change a saved answer. NEET CBT rules have not been announced.
Will there be multiple shifts or normalisation?
No decision has been announced for NEET. NTA uses multiple shifts and normalisation in some other exams, but that does not confirm the plan for NEET.
Is a free NEET CBT mock available from NTA?
There is no official NEET CBT mock yet, since NEET is not a CBT exam yet. Our practice screen is an NTA-style demo, not an official NTA test.
