Will NEET 2027 be a computer-based test?

Updated 4 November 2026By Nirmal Sunda, NEET mentor at Testline

As of 4 November 2026, NTA has not announced the mode for NEET-UG 2027. The Education Ministry said in May that NEET would move to CBT, and NTA told the Supreme Court it planned CBT from 2027. Later, the Centre said the move was still under consideration. Recent reports say the exam may stay on paper or use a hybrid format.

Will NEET 2027 be online or on paper?

The honest answer is that it has not been decided publicly. NEET-UG is still a pen-and-paper exam. NEET 2025, NEET 2026 and the 21 June 2026 re-exam were held on paper.

The May statement and NTA's court affidavit pointed towards CBT. In August, the Centre told the Court that the change remained under consideration. In early November, news reports described both a paper exam and a possible hybrid exam. Until NTA issues a notice, none of those reports settles the mode.

The Centre said the decision depends on the Nandan Nilekani-led task force and consultation with stakeholders. The task force's term was reported to have been extended to January 2027. Medical Dialogues report

Is the 2027 date or exam pattern out?

No. NTA has not announced the NEET-UG 2027 exam date, registration dates or information bulletin. Some websites claim the exam date and application dates are out. We checked NTA's site and major news reports, and nothing backs those claims. Do not rely on them.

The latest established pattern is from NEET 2025 and 2026: 180 compulsory questions, 720 marks, and 180 minutes. A correct answer gets +4, a wrong answer gets −1, and an unanswered question gets 0. This is the current pattern, not a promise about 2027. Pattern details

Rumour check: 400 marks, two phases or a January exam?

  • 400 marks: No official notice says NEET 2027 will be out of 400. The current NEET pattern is 720 marks.
  • Two phases or two attempts: Not decided. The Centre said it was considering a single-stage and a two-stage model. That does not mean two attempts have been announced. ThePrint report
  • Twice a year: No official notice says NEET will happen twice a year.
  • From home: No NEET 2027 rule says candidates can take the exam from home. NTA's existing JEE Main and CUET CBT instructions describe assigned terminals at exam centres. JEE Main CBT instructions
  • January exam: No official date says NEET 2027 will be held in January. NTA has not announced the exam date.
  • Exam date already released: Some sites show a 3 May 2027 date. NTA's site does not. Treat it as unverified. NTA website

Why practise CBT if NEET's mode is not decided?

JEE Main and CUET already use NTA's CBT screen. NEET may move to CBT in 2027 or later, but that is not settled. Learning to read questions on screen, use a mouse and move through a question palette can take practice.

Our practice screen follows the interface NTA uses for JEE Main and CUET. It is not an official NEET CBT, because NTA has not released one. Use it to learn the buttons and screen flow, while you keep studying the NEET syllabus as usual.
