CBT full form and meaning: what is a CBT exam?

Updated 4 November 2026By Nirmal Sunda, NEET mentor at Testline

CBT stands for Computer Based Test. In a CBT exam, you read questions and enter answers on a computer screen. In NTA exams such as JEE Main and CUET-UG, candidates take the test at an assigned centre terminal. Here is how the screen-based process works, and what to practise before your exam.

NTA's JEE Main and CUET-UG instructions describe this process. The exact rules for your exam are in its own bulletin.

  1. Log in at your assigned computer. The NTA instructions say each candidate uses an assigned terminal and a login ID and password. The welcome screen shows your photo.
  2. Read the instructions. Wait for the stated start time. Check how the answer buttons and question palette work.
  3. Read a question on screen. Choose an answer with the mouse. Use the on-screen buttons to save it or mark it for review.
  4. Move around the paper. Use the question palette to open another question. You can change answers during the test. Sections appear on the top bar, and you can move between them.
  5. Watch the timer. In NTA's JEE Main and CUET instructions, the timer runs on the server. When it reaches zero, the exam ends by itself.

The JEE Main 2025 bulletin and CUET-UG 2026 bulletin explain these screen rules. For a closer look at the buttons and question palette, read our NTA-style CBT screen guide.

Is a CBT exam taken at home or at a centre?

CBT means the exam is taken on a computer. It does not, by itself, tell you where to take it. NTA's JEE Main and CUET instructions describe candidates sitting at assigned terminals at exam centres. They do not describe a home test.

For NEET, the mode is still not decided for 2027. As of 4 November 2026, NTA has not issued an official notice on the exam mode. See the NEET 2027 CBT status page for the latest known position.

Which Indian exams use NTA's CBT system?

JEE Main and CUET-UG use NTA's computer-based test system. UGC-NET uses the same NTA interface. NTA's Test Practice Centre lists JEE Main, CUET and UGC-NET, along with NEET, in its exam dropdown. The page says its tests are for practice.

What are the good points and hard parts of CBT?

A CBT screen lets you move between questions and change an answer while the test is open. The timer is visible, and the question palette shows your progress. You do not fill an OMR circle for each answer in this process.

You need to get used to reading and answering on a screen. The Centre has raised concerns about access for rural candidates, candidates in low-connectivity areas, and the shortage of test centres in some regions. Those are real issues to watch as exam plans are made.

What should you practise before a CBT exam?

  • Try a practice test on a computer, if you can. Use the mouse to choose and change an answer.
  • Learn the palette symbols. Check which questions are answered, unanswered, or marked for review.
  • Read the button labels before clicking. In NTA's current CBT instructions, Save & Next saves your answer and moves on. Clicking a palette number does not save the answer on your current question.
  • Keep an eye on the timer. Check your exam's instructions for what happens when time runs out.
  • If you mark a question for review, make sure you have selected an answer if you want it evaluated. In JEE Main and CUET, an answered question marked for review is evaluated; one marked for review without an answer is not.
