CBT exam-day rules: rough sheets, calculator, language and more
If NEET moves to CBT, what should you expect on exam day? NTA has not announced NEET-UG 2027 rules yet. This guide uses only NTA’s JEE Main 2025 and CUET-UG 2026 CBT instructions as a reference. The seat, rough work, calculator, language and computer-failure rules below may not be the final NEET rules.
What is known about NEET exam-day rules?
As of 4 November 2026, NTA has not issued an official notice on the mode or bulletin for NEET-UG 2027. The Centre told the Supreme Court the CBT move was under active consideration, as reported by ThePrint in August 2026. Read the latest NEET CBT status and check NTA’s site for updates.
For now, treat JEE Main and CUET instructions as examples. NTA may set different rules for NEET. The source documents are the JEE Main 2025 Information Bulletin, Appendix IX and the CUET-UG 2026 Information Bulletin, Appendix V.
How do login and seat assignment work?
In the JEE Main and CUET CBT bulletins, each candidate uses an assigned computer terminal. You log in with an ID and password. The welcome screen shows your photo. You can read the instructions until the test start time.
Follow the seat and login details given to you at the centre. The NEET seating and login steps are not published yet. Read your NEET admit card and the on-screen instructions when NTA releases them.

Do you get rough sheets? Do you return them?
The JEE Main and CUET bulletins say blank or rough sheets are provided at the centre. You write your name and roll number on them, then hand them back to the invigilator.
Use the sheets for calculations and rough work. Do not take this as a confirmed NEET rule. Check the NEET instructions when they are released.
Can you use a calculator in a CBT exam?
The JEE Main and CUET CBT bulletins prohibit calculators, including calculator watches. They also say there is no on-screen calculator. The keyboard is disabled. For numeric answers, those exams provide an on-screen keypad used with the mouse.
Whether NEET will have an on-screen calculator is unknown. Do not plan to use one unless the NEET bulletin says it is allowed. Practise calculations by hand on paper.
Can you change the question paper language?
In JEE Main, you can click your Profile image at the top right to change the language during the exam. The paper appears in English and the language you chose. If there is a translation dispute, the English version is treated as final.
This is a JEE Main rule. The NEET language switch method has not been announced. Read how language and buttons work on an NTA-style screen to practise the controls, but follow the real exam instructions on test day.
What if the computer stops working?
The JEE Main bulletin says that if a computer malfunctions, the candidate is moved to another machine. The lost time is restored on the server. Tell the invigilator as soon as you notice a problem. Do not try to fix the computer yourself.
This is the JEE Main rule in the bulletin. NEET’s plan for computer problems is not known yet.
Does the timer submit your exam?
In the JEE Main and CUET instructions, the timer is set on the server. When it reaches zero, the exam ends by itself. You do not have to submit the test manually.
Keep an eye on the timer, but do not panic if it reaches zero. The NEET system may have its own instructions, so read them before the test starts. You can also see how the CBT screen and question palette work.
What should you carry to the centre?
The JEE Main and CUET CBT rules in these sources do not provide a NEET carry list. NTA has not published NEET-UG 2027 exam-day instructions yet. Check your admit card for the allowed items, reporting time and centre details once it is available.
Do not rely on a list from a coaching post or an older exam. The NEET bulletin will be the place to check the final rules.
Exam-day checklist
Use this as a practice checklist based on NTA’s existing CBT exams. Confirm each item against the NEET admit card and instructions when they come out.
- Find your login details and assigned seat or terminal at the centre.
- Read the instructions before the test begins.
- Write your name and roll number on rough sheets, if provided, and return them.
- Keep calculators and calculator watches away unless NEET instructions say otherwise.
- Use the on-screen language control only after checking the exam instructions.
- Tell the invigilator right away if the computer stops working.
- Watch the server timer. In JEE Main and CUET, it ends the test at zero.
- Check the admit card for what to carry and when to report.
Try the controls in our CBT practice test before exam day. It can help you feel calmer with a screen, but it is not an official NEET CBT.
